The division enforces Florence County’s food safety and labeling laws. The division inspects food establishments statewide including food processors, dairy farms, dairy plants, meat processors, retail food establishments and caterers, and vending machine operators.The Food Safety and Recreational Licensing staff are also responsible for managing programs that enforce applicable state administrative codes for the inspection and licensure of hotels, public swimming pools including water park attractions, campgrounds, tattoo and body piercing establishments.The Florence County Health Department (FCHD) protects the community’s health by ensuring that restaurants, hotels, bed and breakfast establishments, public swimming pools, water attractions, campgrounds, and tattoo and body piercing establishments are in compliance the respective laws. The communities served include Tipler, Long Lake, Fern, Fence, Aurora, Commonwealth, Spread Eagle, and Florence.All establishment inspections are conducted by Environmental Health Specialists (EHS), whom are nationally Registered Environmental Health Sanitarians. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) transient non-community (TNC) systems programFlorence County Health Department Water Fees:Bacteria $35.00/sampleThe Florence County Health Department’s Water Analysis Lab is certified by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) to conduct bacteriological testing of public and private wells. The Florence County Health Department’s Water Lab also monitors the public drinking water systems enrolled in the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) transient non-community (TNC) systems program. To maintain state certification, the laboratory conducts required proficiency testing and completes quality assurance and quality control exercises on a daily basis. Florence County Health Department’s Water Analysis Lab provides convenient, reliable, and reasonably priced well water testing for both home and vacation properties. This service is available to anyone; you do not need to be a Florence County resident. Lab tests completed on-site include coliform and E. coli bacteria, with definitive results within 48 hours. Through a partnership with UW Oshkosh, Florence County Health Department’s Water Analysis Lab offers additional testing to include nitrates. Private Well TestingWater testing is an inexpensive and effective way of assuring a safe and healthy water supply. It’s estimated that 20-25% of Wisconsin wells have bacteria contamination. Florence County Health Department advises all private well owners to have their well water tested annually for coliform bacteria. If there are infants under six months of age or women of childbearing age drinking the water, the water should be tested for nitrates as well. How do I test my private well drinking water?To test private well water:1.Obtain water sample bottles, instructions and a water analysis form from the Florence County Health Department located at 501 Lake Avenue, Florence. 2.Collect your water sample by following the step by step instructions on the back of the Florence County Health Department Water Test Request Form.3.Submit your water sample to the Health Department within 4 hours of collection. Submissions must include the water sample(s). Sample bottles and forms can be picked up at the Florence County Health Department during these business hours:oMonday - Wednesday 8:00 AM-4:00 PM. Schedule is subject to change.
